I've been working on websites since almost the beginning. After a meeting with Les Walgreen, who was developing his idea for a Walgreens home page, I was hooked. A few of us from the advertising department joined Les in creating a skunkworks group that built the drug store chains first site.
Les eventually left with another designer to start a new media company and I eventually left to be part of the growth of Underwriters Laboratories' web presence.
During my tenure at UL and in the few years since, I have designed, built and maintained sites for small businesses and individuals. I'm always looking for more. If you fit in that category, and want to improve or start your web presence, let me know. If you are part of a larger company with a more complicated site and have a need for design help, let me know.
Working in partnership with Pear Design, a Chicago design and branding agency, I built these sites to their design specifications using current best practices in website construction. If you are looking for a more complete branding solution or if you like what you see below, please take a look at what Pear Design can do for you.

I will design and build an attractive, easy to use website that will support your branding and marketing as well as be your online presence, allowing your business to thrive in the increasingly competitive digital world.
Although, if you need branding or yours needs a little sprucing up, I can do that too.I have 30 years of graphic design experience and can handle all, if not most of your visual identity needs, from logos to stationary to brochures and beyond.
Everyone is talking about the mobile web these days. Gone are the days when websites were only viewed on a computer. Today’s website must be useable on any number of mobile devices. I design websites that are responsive to your customers’ devices. Your site will look good and make the best use of space. The same site will work on a wide screen monitor where it can spread out and use the horizontal space and scroll beautifully on the narrowest phone.
While I can build you a straight-forward HTML website, today’s sites are best built on a platform. Each modern web platform has its own set of modules and tools that allow me to create a site that fits your needs. The cost and time savings are tremendous. Today’s web platforms enable me to build you something that would have been prohibitive just a few years ago as you would have needed to hire a team.
There are open-source PLATFORMS such as Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal as well as hosted commercial CMSES such as Squarespace, Perch and Business Catalyst. They all have different and similar capabilities. I will advise you on the best solution for your project and get you started.
Almost all of the web platforms mentioned above can be used for e-commerce as there are plug-ins and modules that can handle this function. However, if you have a lot to sell, mostly or only sell online, you’ll probably want a shopping cart. It’s essentially a specialized platform that usually can do more than a simple plugin. Happily, they are comparably priced and as easy to work with as the general web platforms. I can design and build an open source solution such as OpenCart or use a commercial application such as Shopify. Today’s shopping carts are very sophisticated and highly customizable, offering incredible savings over creating one from scratch.
I don’t offer web hosting or resell it. If you don’t already have a hosting account, I will help you select one and set it up for you.
First we’ll discuss your needs so I can determine what solution or solutions are best for you. Then I will research your industry, your competitors, the websites you are inspired by. This will give me an understanding of the design direction and focus.
The next step is to build a site framework - essentially a working website without the content and styling so you can see how it will work for your customers
At the same time, I’ll design either mockups or I’ll actually build a few pages so you can get a sense of how the site will look.
We will then discuss them and I’ll make whatever revisions are needed. Rinse and repeat.
Once you’re happy with where we are going, I’ll get cracking and build the site.
Then I will test and retest it. Even though today’s web standards give a reasonable expectation that the website will work well in most browsers and devices, it still needs to be tested and tested.
After I’m sure that it is ready, we’ll go over it and I’ll make any revisions you need and fix any problems.
When you feel it’s ready, I’ll launch your site. I won’t abandon you at this point, though. If you ever find anything wrong, even if it’s a typo on content you supplied, I’ll fix it for free and quickly.
While some developers have a menu of prices and services, I feel it is impossible to do this. We need to have a discussion first. What are your needs? Maybe there is a simpler and more affordable way of doing something. Maybe there is something you didn’t think of?
If you need a ballpark, though, I can try and give you one. Usually there is a site that you’ve seen that is similar to what you’re looking for. I could probably come up with a couple of ballpark figures or price range for a similar site. Sometimes you just need an idea of what something will cost before you move forward. I get it.
As I mentioned above, I won’t leave you hanging after the website is launched. I’m definitely available to fix things that should have been fixed. I am also happy to be available for revisions. This can be done on an as-needed basis or we can work out an affordable plan.
I design and build websites using the best practices and web standards. This helps search engines index the sites faster and more completely. I will also install necessary SEO plugins, set up Google Analytics and help you get started with Search Engine Optimization.
However, it is useful to note that the major search engines look upon their rankings as a recommendation. When a search engine gives a high rank to a website, they are essentially saying that business does good work, is well respected, has great customer service and has been around for a long time. They determine this by things like number of links to the site, Yelp reviews, social media presence and buzz. In essence, if you do good work with your business, it will be reflected in your search engine rankings.
However, that being said, there are a number of tricks and techniques that will help convince the search engines to rank your site higher. It is an ongoing responsibility—monitoring traffic, keyword search results, engaging with people on social media and responding to changes, buying keywords creating landing pages and testing (even integrating direct mail and print ads). This level of SEO is beyond the scope of what I do.
If you are looking for a more thorough SEO experience, I can put you in touch with someone who can.
Thank you for your interest in my work. I hope we can connect and I can help you on your next web project.
In addition to creating new sites, I can also re-skin your old one just make some simple updates to an existing site or do some ongoing maintenance. Just give me a holler!
For those of you that are already managing a web project and need some help I’m also available for long or short term contract work, either on premise in the Chicago area or remotely. Please let me know if you need any help!
